What do NHS organisations need to do in light of the Climate Change Act?
The Climate Change Act is the first legislation of its kind in the world, establishing a long-term legal framework to tackling climate change. The NHS needs to achieve at least a 10 per cent reduction in emissions by 2015 compared to 2007 levels and NHS Sustainable Development Unit launched the NHS carbon reduction strategy in January 2009. The targets will require every single aspect of the NHS to change, from transport to energy use and waste. By addressing this, the NHS can not only have a considerable impact on reducing its carbon footprint but also its costs.
