NHS Management Trainees experiences

Our dedicated NHS management trainees have explored how triple bottom line quality improvement can shape a more sustainable future for healthcare. By joining our team on fixed-term placements, they’ve applied fresh perspectives and innovative approaches to projects that balance patient care, environmental impact, and financial stewardship. Their contributions have strengthened our sustainability programmes and advanced key initiatives across the system.

When they return to their roles, these trainees continue to embed what they’ve learned — advocating for sustainability, influencing decision-making, and helping to build a healthcare service that is greener, fairer, and more resilient.

Discover insights from recent placements to see how they’re driving change across the NHS.

Testimonials

I wanted to say thank you again for providing the opportunity to work with CSH for the past 8 weeks. It has been an absolute privilege, and I have been consistently impressed by both the output of the charity, and the passion of those who work within. It has opened my eyes to many of the challenges we face, but also to the paths we can take to make even small improvements. I really look forward to seeing how CSH progress, and how I can use this experience for the remainder of my career.

My experience at CSH highlighted the urgent need to make sustainability a core part of healthcare, not an afterthought. As a future NHS leader, I am determined to champion systemic change that drives us towards the NHS Net Zero ambitions, realising that change begins with what I can do here and now, not when everything around me permits it. ”

“Thank you for welcoming me with so much warmth and encouragement. Being part of the team has been meaningful and eye-opening, I’ve learned so much, not only about the work itself, but also about the compassion and dedication it takes to create real impact in the community. What I’ve appreciated most is how supportive CSH is. You create an environment where people feel valued and inspired, and that’s something I’ll carry with me long after this experience. CSH has reminded me of the power of purpose-driven work. It’s been an honour to be part of this and I hope we can stay connected.”

“I helped write a report on accelerating sustainable healthcare innovation, commissioned by NHSE, as part of a larger review of innovation in the NHS. My contributions were to facilitate workshop discussions to brainstorm initial ideas and themes. I then led interviews with stakeholders (including NICE, the Net Zero Lead for Health Innovation Networks, and the CEO of a supplier of reusable medical textiles) to understand challenges and support required for increasing sustainable innovation in the NHS. Drafted report, made recommendations, edited and refined etc. From this work I learned about systemic challenges in research and adoption of innovation, and the actions (both at national policy and Trust level) to mitigate these. I also learned negotiation and influencing skills! I also led on communication project, including re-structuring training materials.”

“Participating in the ‘Introduction to Sustainable Healthcare’ course gave me a solid grounding in sustainable healthcare principles. I then worked on projects such as the Sustainable Anaesthetics course and developed educational resources for GPs and midwives. These experiences broadened my understanding of how to implement sustainable practices in clinical settings. I’m excited to take these lessons into my future career, particularly in medical education.”
