Course outline

This course equips you, as a nurse or midwife, with the knowledge, tools, and professional support to lead sustainable innovation within your area of practice. Recognising the critical role that nurses and midwives play at every level of healthcare delivery, this training enables you to integrate environmental sustainability, social equity, and quality improvement into your clinical and organisational responsibilities.

Delivered through a combination of self-paced online learning and a live, interactive webinar, the course provides both a theoretical foundation and practical guidance. You will explore the complex relationship between human health, climate change, and ecological degradation, and examine how healthcare systems are both contributors to and affected by these challenges.

The second part of the course includes structured support for developing a sustainability project based on the Sustainable Quality Improvement (SusQI) methodology. This approach enables you to apply sustainability principles to real-world quality improvement projects, enhancing patient care while reducing environmental impact and promoting long-term system resilience.

Through real-life case studies, evidence-informed strategies, and peer collaboration, you will be supported to identify opportunities for positive change within your own practice. You will also be invited to participate in our active online professional network, fostering continued learning, knowledge exchange, and collective impact across the wider health and care community.

I am a nurse or a midwife, why should I book this course?

This course is specifically designed to support nurses and midwives like you to stay up to date with the latest evidence-based practices and enhance your skills and knowledge. It is designed both for health and social care.

By completing this course, you will be equipped to effectively plan, implement, and evaluate a sustainability project within your area of work. You will gain practical skills and confidence to integrate sustainable practices into your day-to-day role, contributing to improved outcomes for patients, communities, and the environment. Whether working independently or as part of a wider team, you will be supported to make meaningful, measurable changes that align with the principles of sustainable healthcare.

By booking this course, you’ll earn valuable Continuing Professional Development (CPD) credits, ensuring you meet your NMC professional development requirements while improving your expertise.

It is a great opportunity to expand your knowledge, stay ahead in your field, and enhance the quality of care you provide to your patients.

Course structure

This course is delivered in three parts:

Part I. Self-study online

Interactive online materials covering all course content, illustrated with case studies, presented in bite-sized modules. The course is flexible to your interests and available time; the full course contains around 8 hours of more in depth study which you can complete at your own pace and based on your own schedule and preferences. A discussion forum allows you to reflect on your learning and share thoughts and ideas with fellow learners.

A short video on the home page outlines how to navigate the learning platform and obtain your certificate of completion. The learning materials are available to you from the point of booking and for 6 months after your workshop date.

Part 2. Live workshop online

This 2-hour virtual session builds on your self-paced learning, offering expert guidance and peer support to help you develop your own sustainability project. With a focus on practical application, this workshop builds on the SusQI methodology and supports you in translating your knowledge into a real-world project within your work setting. Through facilitated discussions and access to tools and resources, you’ll leave the session with a clear project idea and the next steps for implementation. A certificate of completion is issued for this component.

Part 3. Mentoring

Following the workshop, you are invited to join our online Sustainable Healthcare Cafés: informal, supportive sessions designed to help you stay connected with peers and CSH staff. These 1-hour cafés offer a space to discuss progress, share challenges, and gain feedback on your sustainability project. They are held regularly throughout the year, and you’re welcome to attend as often as you like.

You’ll also be encouraged to join our Nursing and Midwifery Sustainability Network, where you can continue to exchange ideas, access resources, and collaborate with colleagues committed to embedding sustainability into nursing and midwifery practice.
