
Kidney Centre Sustainability Champion Information Pack
The UK Kidney Centre Sustainability Champion role is essential to accelerate high quality, low-carbon and cost-efficient kidney care. Kidney care has significant environmental impacts as treatment can be energy and water intensive. There is huge potential to ensure environmental responsibility whilst delivering quality care – but the scheme needs you!
By becoming a Sustainability Champion for your kidney centre (main or satellite), you can lead quality improvement initiatives, develop new skills, and network and collaborate with patients and multidisciplinary teams to co-create sustainability solutions. We welcome Champions from all kidney care disciplines, from dialysis nurses to renal registrars and technicians – all are welcome to apply.
The Kidney Centre Sustainable Champions’ scheme is run by the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare in collaboration with the UK Kidney Association, funded by Medice and Fresenius Medical Care.
Why become a Kidney Centre Sustainability Champion?
- Join a community of practice taking positive action to make kidney care more sustainable
- Represent your centre in a national initiative and network with like-minded individuals
- Receive support from sustainable quality improvement (SusQI) experts to develop your QI skills and lead projects, adding to your portfolio

- Tackle inequities in healthcare and improvement the quality of care delivered to your patients
What will you be expected to do?
- Complete a 1 hour online course to gain knowledge and skills to lead your own SusQI project
- Lead your centre’s participation (main or satellite) in a national audit, submitting data through an easy to use survey
- Join the online Kidney Care Sustainability Network. Attend at least one online event and post at least once – this can be a simply introduction of your role and centre
- Share best practice with your team to accelerate sustainable change and improve patient outcomes
- Engage with your multi-professional team to promote sustainability – think about setting up a local sustainability group
- Engage with patient representatives on improving sustainability and quality of care
What support will you have as a champion?
- Access to CSH’s online module, ‘An Introduction to Sustainable Kidney Care’, developed in partnership with KitNewCare
- Quarterly Champions drop in session with the project lead – network, collaborate and share ideas with your fellow Champions
- Global networking at monthly online events with guest speakers via our Kidney Care Sustainability Network
- A Sustainable Kidney Care Toolkit, including 13 how-to-guides with practical information to implement a SusQI project in your centre
- Access to valuable case studies and resources
- Access to the national audit tool
