Past Projects
Past projects with ongoing impact
The Centre for Sustainable Healthcare has been engaging in research and projects pushing the boundaries of sustainable healthcare since 2008. Although many studies and research projects may be over, their impact on current best practice and continued work is immeasurable. Read about some of our past work here
Green walking project
The Centre for Sustainable Healthcare’s Green Walking Project aims to move the mental health paradigm away from a more clinical, medication led approach, and towards a more sustainable and holistic model of care. The Green Walking Project aims to reconnect patients with nature and outside spaces both as a form of treatment and as a preventative measure.
Green Surgery Challenge
The Green Surgery Challenge 2021 was an opportunity for the UK’s surgical community to recognise the value of sustainable healthcare for surgical conditions: to share and promote ways of practising that are less harmful to the environment and our planet and build social sustainability: to continue to transform surgery for the future.
SusQI education project
The SusQI Education project (2019-22) has facilitated the integration of sustainability into health professions education on quality improvement (QI).
Connecting Q Locally
CHS ran a series of 4 virtual events addressing ‘hot topics’ in sustainable healthcare. These events allowed debate and discussion and a meeting place for professionals and academics alike to push forward the sustainable paradigm in the healthcare sector.
Bee Healthy
The Bee Healthy project was developed as a project to help GP surgeries to create borders with nectar-rich herbaceous perennials. These are attractive to bumblebees and other pollinators and also benefit patients, staff and visitors.
Workplace wellbeing and green space study
Research by the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare shows gardens and other green spaces at hospital sites have an important role to play in supporting staff wellbeing. CSH continued that research with a year long workplace wellbeing and green space study.
Sustainable Dentistry Guide
This Guide has been developed as a practical resource for dental teams wishing take action to make their practice more sustainable.
The nitrous oxide project
The nitrous oxide project is a way to promote a lean methodology to identify system waste and improve medical gas management at acute sites.
The desflurane reduction project
The Desflurane Reduction Project explores the clinical, environmental, social and financial impacts of Desflurane use, what alternatives exist, and steps to reduce the use of it in hospitals.
The Anaesthetic Gas Scavenging System (AGSS) project
The ‘AGSS Project‘ is a tool that is ready for you, as a member of the theatre team, to use. It will help you to implement a strategy to reduce the operating hours of these devices, ensuring they are on when they need to be and helping to maintain the safety of staff members.
