Vanessa Curtis was born in Johannesburg, South Africa and spent her childhood travelling and going to school in Malawi, Tanzania and Chile as her father worked for the United Nations. In 2003 she moved to Wales and attended the University of Glamorgan where she completed her BA Hons degree in Adult Nursing in 2006. Her first nursing job was on a surgical ward specialising in Urology followed by several years in Vascular surgery and since 2010 she has worked in Dermatology. The work is extremely varied - a great deal of time is spent supporting patients suffering from mental health conditions caused mainly by having a debilitating chronic skin condition. Vanessa has a passion for the environment and has been collecting items at work from colleagues for terracycling, such as crisp packets, bread bags and pet food pouches. She has placed a box on every floor of the department to encourage people to bring their terracycling to work and, every week, takes the items home to sort. They are then added to her own family's items and she takes them to a drop off point where they are sent off and money raised for local charities.
