About The Centre for Sustainable Healthcare
The Centre for Sustainable Healthcare provides research, training, and strategic input to national and local health programmes.
Our Education Programme provides training in sustainable healthcare and planetary health for health professionals in educational institutions, professional bodies and healthcare organisations.
In our other work, the Clinical Transformation Programme mainstreams environmental sustainability within clinical areas so that it is integral to the planning of health systems and the practice of healthcare professionals. And the Green Space for Health Programme works to realise the value of the NHS green estate for physical and mental health, supporting NHS sites to develop their green space for the benefit of patients, staff and communities, while improving biodiversity and combatting climate change.
About the role
The Centre for Sustainable Healthcare (CSH) is seeking an enthusiastic Registered Nurse or midwife with a strong passion for driving sustainable healthcare change and innovation to lead an ambitious educational programme, The Future of Health and Social Care: Harnessing the Power of Nursing and Midwifery to Lead Change in Climate and Social Justice. This role is a unique opportunity to empower the UK’s nursing and midwifery workforce to address climate change and health inequalities through education, leadership and the development of sustainable practices.
The Nurse and Midwifery Innovation Project Lead will play a pivotal role in designing, implementing, and managing a tiered educational programme that equips nurses and midwives across the UK with the knowledge and skills to integrate sustainability and equity into healthcare. This position requires leadership and influencing skills, a deep understanding of health inequalities, and a passion for climate and social justice.
Key Responsibilities
Programme Development and Delivery
- Lead the development and implementation of the three-tiered sustainable healthcare educational programme in collaboration with CSH’s Education and Training team.
- Manage programme delivery, ensuring quality, accessibility, and scalability of online learning and live workshops.
- Facilitate webinars, workshops, and networking opportunities for participants to share best practices and drive innovation.
- Inspire, influence and educate participants to lead sustainable change across their organisations.
- Support the creation of project-specific content for external communications.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Act as the key point of contact for participants, partner organisations, and stakeholders, building strong relationships to ensure the success of the programme.
- Collaborate with nursing and midwifery professional bodies, educators, and healthcare leaders to expand the reach and impact of the programme.
- Support the recruitment of participants for each course tier, including frontline nurses, service leads, and strategic leaders.
Leadership and Advocacy
- Champion sustainable healthcare practices and advocate for climate and social justice within health and social care.
- Mentor and inspire participants to develop and implement sustainability-focused workplace projects.
- Engage with senior leaders and policymakers to drive systemic change, embedding sustainability into healthcare delivery and leadership.
Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting
- Oversee monitoring and evaluation of the programme, tracking progress toward key outcomes (e.g., number of participants trained, workplace projects implemented, carbon reduction metrics).
- Prepare reports for funders and stakeholders, showcasing the programme’s achievements and its contribution to health equity and sustainability.
- Identify opportunities to improve and scale the programme, ensuring a legacy of ongoing impact.
About you
Essential Qualifications and Skills
- Registered Nurse (RN) or Midwife (RM): Must hold current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
- Leadership Experience: Demonstrated experience leading projects, teams, or initiatives within healthcare or education.
- Passion for Sustainability: Deep commitment to climate action, social justice, and sustainable healthcare.
- Educational Expertise: Experience in delivering training, workshops, or educational programmes, preferably within the health or social care sector.
- Knowledge of Health Inequalities: Strong understanding of the social determinants of health and their intersection with climate change.
- Communication and Advocacy Skills: Ability to effectively communicate complex ideas, advocate for change, and inspire diverse audiences.
- Project Management: Strong organisational and problem-solving skills, with experience managing timelines, budgets, and multiple stakeholders.
Desirable Skills and Attributes
- Familiarity with sustainability frameworks (e.g., Sustainability in Quality Improvement [SusQI], carbon footprinting).
- Experience in virtual/online learning delivery and development.
- Experience working with diverse or vulnerable populations.
- An academic or professional background in public health, environmental health, or healthcare innovation.

Location
This is a predominantly home-based role. The role will require some travel within the UK for visits, meetings, and conferences. We encourage the use of sustainable travel wherever feasible. Staff are expected to attend in-person office meeting days in Oxford once a month. Reasonable travel costs for attending these meetings are reimbursed.
Appointment
This is a part time post at a salary of £38,000 per annum, pro rata (actual salary £30,400), plus contributory pension. The appointment is for a fixed term position until 31 December 2026. You will be based remotely but should be able to come to team meetings in Oxford at least once a month.
