The Green Nursing Challenge 2025 is officially underway. Following a rigorous application process, six outstanding teams have been selected to take part in this year’s programme, designed to support nurses in leading sustainable healthcare improvements.
Delivered by the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare, the challenge combines expert training, coaching, and project support to empower nursing teams to develop and implement measurable, practical sustainability projects in clinical settings.
The selected teams have now completed their initial workshops and are set to begin testing and implementing their ideas. Their projects aim to reduce carbon emissions, improve patient outcomes, and support a more resource-efficient NHS.
Here are the teams and a brief summary of their projects:
- Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital: Combining maternity and IBD services to reduce repeat visits and streamline care.
- Sheffield Progressive Care Unit: Introducing reusable kidney dishes to cut down on single-use plastics.
- Oxfordshire Community Nursing: Using continuous blood glucose monitoring to improve diabetes care and reduce hospital admissions.
- Liverpool Heart & Chest Hospital: Switching from IV to oral medications where appropriate and reducing single-use echo probe sheaths.
- Lewisham Community & Primary Care: Launching a structured ‘Trial Without Catheter’ process to improve outcomes and reduce admissions.
- Birmingham Community Healthcare: Using an app to support self-management for long-term conditions, preventing deterioration and unnecessary emissions.
These projects demonstrate the innovation, ambition, and leadership of nurses in driving meaningful environmental change in the NHS.
We’ll be following each team as their work progresses and look forward to sharing their impact over the coming months.
