Introducing the 2016-17 RCPsych Sustainability Scholars
Five trainee psychiatrists have taken up the baton as Sustainability Scholars this Autumn, and are busy learning all about sustainability in mental health care and shaping their projects for the coming year.
The programme is managed by CSH, with funding from the Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCPsych), Health Education England (Thames Valley) and a number of CCGs, who are benefiting from scholars working with their mental health commissioning teams.
This year, the Scholars also have the opportunity to link with the newly established Sustainability Committee at the RCPsych, chaired by the College’s Associate Registrar and former Sustainability Fellow, Dr. Daniel Maughan.
Here is a quick introduction:
DR. EMMA BRANDISH - ST4 IN GENERAL ADULT PSYCHIATRY, SALISBURY
Emma has interests in quality improvement, behavioural change and the comorbidity between mental health problems and substance use. Her scholarship is hosted by Wiltshire County Council working with both the local Public Health team and the Clinical Commissioning Group.
DR. DAVID GREGORY - ST6 IN GENERAL ADULT PSYCHIATRY, BRIGHTON
David is interested in exploring a sustainable approach to mental health service commissioning. Through the scholarship he is working with Brighton and Hove CCG on a number of projects over the coming year, including developing mental health outreach services for university students in Brighton.
DR. ASUKA LESLIE - ST4 IN GENERAL ADULT PSYCHIATRY, EAST LONDON
Asuka has a background in public health and her interest in sustainability stems from her experiences in international development in Rwanda, where she worked in HIV and family planning. She will be working with City & Hackney CCG on their devolution pilot and the wider sustainable development management plan around this.
DR. SHIVA MARJANI - ST4 IN PSYCHIATRY OF LEARNING DISABILITIES, OXFORD
Shiva previously worked in emergency services for a number of years prior to joining Psychiatry training. She is currently conducting a sustainability review of the learning disabilities service in North Oxfordshire, to identify areas for improvement.
DR. DAVID MCLAUGHLAN - ST4 IN GENERAL ADULT PSYCHIATRY, SOUTH EAST LONDON
Through his scholarship, David is working with a rehabilitation team at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust to pilot the use of videoconferencing to reduce travel and increase contact with patients placed out-of-area.
